WA YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position:               Assistant Music Director Traineeship

Reporting to:        Artistic Director

Engagement:        Casual

Supervises:          Nil

POSITION PURPOSE

This position has been designed for emerging musicians, band directors, conductors, composers and musical directors under the age of 30 to gain experience assisting in the directing of WAYJO’s three large jazz ensembles. 

THE WA YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA

WAYJO is one ofAustralia’s cultural gems, the only youth jazz orchestra of its kind in the country. It provides a unique experience for jazz musicians aged 14 to 25 who are the absolute cream of young jazz players in the state.

Competition for places is fierce, with hundreds of young musicians trying out every year. Those who make it are amongst the best young players in WA and are rewarded with career-defining experiences – touring, training, recording and performing with world-class guest artists.

WAYJO is unique – a hothouse for Australia’s young jazz musicians that is a bridge from aspiring young musician to professional working musician.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The assistant music director will be expected to:

  • Assist the music directors in the planning, coordination and implementation of weekly orchestra rehearsals.
  • Assist the music directors in conducting traditional and non-traditional big band music.
  • Manage and coordinate a small jazz ensemble for rehearsals and public performances.
  • Provide assistance to the music directors in planning, programming and managing regular live music performances.
  • Work with and motivate young emerging musicians.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The successful applicant must be less than 30 years-old and will need to demonstrate:

  • outstanding music skills.
  • a high degree of confidence presenting to large groups.
  • strong interpersonal skills – includes building effective relationships, positive interaction and effective problem solving.
  • high level of knowledge and experience in the music industry.
  • willingness to be mentored on an ongoing basis to develop music directorship skills.
  • proven ability to prioritise a workload and juggle competing demands.
  • a passion for music, arts and culture – specifically jazz music.
