James Morrison

There's no doubt that James Morrison is unique in talent and personality. He is a brilliant technician on trumpet, trombone, euphonium, piano and others too numerous to mention. Amusician of startling originality, Morrison was first noticed overseas as a precocious teenager, when he represented Australia at Jazz Festivals in Monterey and Los Angeles.

Though he is a major jazz figure in Australia (winning the Mo award as Australian Performer of the Year and the Ricky May Performer of the Year award) - it is his impact on the intensely competitive international stage that is most impressive. In 1992, '93 & '94 James headlined a critically acclaimed world tour with the Ray Brown Trio that covered Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, Malaysia, France, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Finland and Germany. He has appeared internationally with his own group and as soloist alongside Wynton Marsalis, Frank Sinatra, Cab Calloway, Woody Shaw, Whitney Houston and Dizzy Gillespie.

More recently, James has recorded "Jazz Meets the Symphony' with London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lalo Schifrin. Performed at concerts at The Royal Albert hall, London with London Philharmonic Orchestra, at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for Princess Anne and for President Clinton at Parliament House Canberra Australia. In 1997, James was recognised for his service to arts in Australia and made a member of the Order of Australia.

John Morrison

John Morrison is consistently voted Australia's best big band drummer, John has delighted audiences for more than 25 years with his dedication to swing. Equally at home in a small group or big band setting, his musical facility runs the entire spectrum from traditional jazz, swing, Bebop, R&B, Soul and commercial jazz rock. The eldest of the Morrison family, John has spent much of his musical life playing and recording with his younger brother James Morrison. At age 8, John began playing cornet in the school brass band and by the age of 10 had built his first drum set from pots and pans. In these early few years he played many different instruments and styles but jazz drumming was to be his calling. John widened his exposure and experience also playing with a variety of other well-known artists including James Moody, Scott Hamilton, Richie Cole, John and Jeff Clayton, Garry Dial, Jimmy Whitherspoon, Eartha Kitt, Don Burrows, George Golla, and Bob Barnard.

Further to his playing schedule, John is a musical director for Pan Pacific and heads highly successful high school jazz music camps. He is known for his work in the recording studio both as player and producer and hosts his own "Jazz at Five" radio show on Sydney radio station FM 99.3

Libby Hammer

Even if you have only brushed with the Perth jazz scene, you will surely have come across the fabulous Libby Hammer. Her stage presence, her sultry and sophisticated vocal style and charismatic performances continue to enthral audiences and always leave them wanting more. Libby's own group Hip Mo’ Toast has been working regularly in Perth since 1997 and has built up a loyal and diverse following with their brand of fun and sophisticated jazz, winning six WAMi awards in the process.

Libby's love of music goes back to when she learnt piano and flute in childhood, getting her first taste of professional performance in Puccini's La Bohème and in the musical Annie, both at His Majesty's Theatre, at the age of just twelve. However it was Libby's growing interest in jazz music that led her to the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts where she completed a Bachelor of Music (Jazz) in 1997. She was also resident vocalist for the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) in 1993 and 1994. In 2005 Libby won the Perth Jazz Society Award for Most Outstanding Individual Contribution To Jazz and in 2007 won PJS Life Membership for Outstanding Long-Term Contribution to Jazz. She is proud to be a Patron of Jazz Fremantle.

Troy Roberts began playing the saxophone at age 13. He was granted an early entrance into the Conservatorium of Music at the age of 15, where he studied with Graeme Lyall, Roger Garrood and Jim Cook. In 2001 he graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) degree winning the acclaimed Bob Wyllie Jazz Scholarship, the Melville Toyota Jazz Scholarship and the James Morrison Jazz Scholarship. Troy completed an Honors Degree at the University of Miami, studying with Ron Miller, Gary Keller, Whit Sidner, James Moody, Dave Leibman and Frank Foster. WAYJO member Callum G’Froerer is Clifford Brown / Stan Getz Fellowship recipient
Fri, 27th April 2007
shadow
Long standing WAYJO member and trumpeter extraordinaire Callum G’Froerer is a Clifford Brown/ Stan Getz Fellowship winner for 2007. Callum missed out on going to New York with WAYJO in 2006 due to pneumonia. But this talented musician just keeps going from strength to strength. A James Morrison finalist for the last two years, Callum plays with a maturity far beyond his years. In 2006 Andrew Murray wrote I’ve got the Melody for Callum and in 2007 Graeme Lyall arranged You Must Believe in Spring to showcase Callums talent. This is definitely a song to listen for at the next WAYJO performance.

The Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowship group is a 5 piece combo chosen from a pool of talented 17 and 18 years olds throughout the world. You must be in year 12 or above to be eligible. It provides awards to winners such as a trip to ARTS week in Miami, instruction from renowned jazz artists and educators and the group performs at the IAJE Annual Conference in January. The program boasts a distinguished list of alumni including Harry Connick Jr., Dianne Reeves, Roy Hargrove, and Geoff Keezer.

WAYJO’s Trumpet player Callum G’Froerer is the 2nd Australian ever to win the fellowship. The first was Matthew Jodrell in 1996. Both were at WAAPA at the time and both were WAYJO members. There is something magic about the combination of studying and WAAPA and performing in WAYJO with Graeme Lyall as the Artistic Director. Congratulations Callum and it’s great you got your trumpet back!!!!

Excerpt from a review by Thomas Conrad

Jazz Times
Umbria Jazz Melbourne 05
Melbourne, - Australia,
Date(s): May 5, 2005 - May 15, 2005
Written By: Thomas Conrad.

“Melbourne, Australia, has hosted an international jazz festival since 1998….. There was a lot to like about this festival. It ran smoothly; Australians are perhaps the world’s warmest hosts; Melbourne, in crisp, clear fall weather, provided a stunning modern cityscape for a backdrop. Of course, the music was the point, and it came in three categories: American (including the festival’s headliners Wayne Shorter, John Scofield and Karrin Allyson), Australian and Italian. The music was usually first rate, and the festival contained two genuine revelations: both alto saxophonists, one a schoolboy and one a senior citizen.
Francesco Cafiso, 15, has been performing publicly with established international jazz musicians since he was nine……It should be fascinating to watch his future unfold. The other revelation of the festival was Graeme Lyall. In the 1970s he was a prominent figure on the Melbourne jazz and studio scenes, but moved to Western Australia 20 years ago and became a music educator, composer and only rarely a player. He appeared at the Forum with the Joe Chindamo Trio, and it was hypnotic from his first phrase. Imagine Paul Desmond, but quieter, intensely distilled, with a tone even more airy and evanescent. Lyall can silence a large room with a whisper. On “Where Is Love,” his brushing against Lionel Bart’s melody was like an emanation of pure spirit. While his touch is light, it is also precise, and proceeds in ideas that arrive as entirely fresh, yet inevitable. On “Every Breath You Take,” Chindamo creatively decorated around Sting’s song and then Lyall just wafted it, let it float by itself on the air. Graeme Lyall is an artist who possesses vast quantities of a rare quality: grace.”

Zurich Insurance and NIBA delegates pledge $40,000. To help WAYJO get to New York
Tue, 30th November 2004
shadow
As the stars twinkle in the bush twilight, 300 people wander into the clearing...well into the Perth Convention Centre for a Knight under the Stars. Yes, Grace Knight came to Perth for a single performance at the newly opened Perth Convention Centre and behind her on the stage playing softly when the delegates arrived was the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Bud lights and trees gave the appearance of the Australian Bush, picnic baskets adorned the tables and what does that have to do with Jazz? Not a lot really, but Grace Knight is a STAR and that night she wanted all the delegates to know that the fantastic band behind her were also stars, Australian Stars and these Australian Stars had been invited to New York in January 2006 to represent Australia at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference.

So she wove some Knight magic and Zurich Insurance headed to the stage with an offer of $20,000 and a challenge to NIBA delegates for $1,000.00 each to 'get these fantastic kids to New York'. While 2005 is when we are really kicking off the sponsorship drive we would like to acknowledge Zurich (who started it all) and the delegates that gave us such a great foundation to our fundraising at the final performance for the year at the Hyde Park Hotel on November 29th.

Graeme Lyall recieves AM for services to music
Tue, 30th November 2004
shadow
Graeme Lyall, the Artistic Director of the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra has been recognized for his service to youth music with an Order of Australia, Member in the Order (AM).

Graeme Lyall can rightly be described as an icon in the Australian music industry. In a career spanning over 40 years, he has excelled as a saxophonist of international standing as well as acting as a mentor, confidante and inspiration to hundreds of aspiring young musicians across Australia.

Graeme has a long and illustrious career as a musician, arranger, composer, musical director, mentor and university lecturer. His passion for supporting young musicians was evident even in the early stages of his career. Graeme has produced/ arranged/ conducted for a who's who of Australian talent, often employing young instrumentalists in recording sessions to give them exposure to a professional environment. He was a member of groups such as the Daly-Wilson band and the Tommy Tycho Orchestra. In the latter capacity he performed for the Queen at the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973 and just over a decade later was the Musical Director for the Royal Gala Concert in the Melbourne Concert Hall during the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Accolades include writing the winning arrangement at the Yamaha International Song Festival four times between 1974 and 1979; arranging and composing television themes such as "Willesee"- and “Special Squad"; composing, arranging and conducting the music for RFL and AFL Grand Finals and winning the Australian Writers and Art Directors Guild Award for the Best Music for a Television Commercial in 1987.

High profile engagements include performing as the Musical Director for the Don Lane Show, Logie Awards, Carols by Candlelight and Hey Hey It's Saturday where he literally launched the careers of a number of young musicians. He has composed and arranged for events ranging from the AFL Grand Final to recordings for Olivia Newton-John, Debra Byrne, Colleen Hewitt and Normie Rowe and a plethora of visiting overseas artists including Sammy Davis Jr, Tony Bennett, Tom Jones and Roger Woodward.

In his role as Artistic Director of the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra, Graeme has enthusiastically promoted emerging artists. His measure of success is reflected in the range of students who have rapidly moved into the professional music sphere both in Australia and overseas. Four James Morrison Scholarship winners and all the Wyllie Scholarship winners have emerged from within the ranks of WAYJO. In addition WAYJO provides a unique forum for students of composition to write original pieces for ensembles ranging in size from swing bands to full fifty piece orchestras.

In addition to the motivation and inspiration he provides to the students, Graeme has established himself as a mentor and confidante to the musicians of the orchestra. The Orchestra’s overall success is rightly attributed to Graeme’s influence. The loyalty he has built up over a period of a few short years is exceptional. Testimony also to his reputation is the involvement of international music "greats" such as Frank Foster from the Count Basie orchestra who was an artist in residence with WAYJO and enthusiastically became a patron of the organisation.

WAYJO is delighted to have had the opportunity to nominate this truly gifted and deserving musician and to see Graeme gain national recognition for the outstanding achievement and contribution he has made to youth music.
